What is arthritis?

Arthritis is an inflammation of one or more joints, causing pain and stiffness. knee, hip, joints of hand and shoulders are mostly involved. Different types of arthritis exist, each with different causes. The common causes are due to wear and tear, rheumatoid arthritis and post injuries. Symptoms include pain, swelling, reduced range of motion and stiffness.

Types of arthritis include:

Degenerative (osteoarthritis) arthritis – The most common type, occurring as the joints wear away, causing bone to rub against bone

Inflammatory arthritis – Develops when the body’s naturally-occurring inflammation attacks the joints. Rheumatoid arthritis and psoriatic arthritis fall under this category

Infectious arthritis – Results after certain bacteria get into the joint and triggers inflammation

Metabolic arthritis – Develops when the body’s uric acid builds up and deposits in the joint

Treatment

Living with arthritis can be different from person to person, and symptoms can vary from day to day. Treatment and management options will vary depending on the type of arthritis you have, its severity and the parts of the body affected.

There is no cure for arthritis. Management options can include medical treatment and medication, physiotherapy, exercise and self-management techniques.

Is surgery needed for knee arthritis?

Osteoarthritis knee in old age is not a disease, it’s a wear and tear phenomena. In mild or moderate stage osteoarthritis, medication , physiotherapy, lifestyle modification can help in reducing the symptoms. Severe stage osteoarthritis will require knee replacement to return to normal quality of life.

Role of knee injections in treating knee osteoarthritis?

Osteoarthritis knee is a mechanical problem in limb alignment. intraarticular knee injections like steroid or hyaluronic acids are suggested as treatment for osteoarthritis. But it has been clearly proved in literature that knee injection have no significant role in treating knee osteoarthritis. They may give temporary pain relief but not a permanent treatment modality.
